Using CDs

update 2004-DEC-13

Music CDs

Just insert the CD and within about 10 seconds the "workman" CD player utility will start. I've found it best not to move the mouse while this is happening, as doing so sometimes causes workman to crash.

Workman has a volume control.

To eject the CD use the eject button in workman. If you accidentally closed the workman window, then use the shell command "eject cdrom".

To turn off the speaker and send the sound to headphones use the audio/volume control on "audioplayer" (accessible from the programs menu when you press the mouse button on background in CDE). Alternately:

  1. From a shell type: /usr/openwin/bin/audiocontrol
  2. Deselect "speaker" and "lineout" and select "headphone".
  3. Do something else.

One final note, while you can plug the headphone directly into the CD and use the dial to adjust the volume, this bypasses all software volume controls. Instead it's preferable to plug the headphone into the back of the computer in the outlet marked with an "a" or an arrow going into a circle - on Ultra 5's it's near the mouse cable [bottom left hole looking from the rear].

Software CDs

Insert CD. The CD will be mounted in the file system at /cdrom.

To eject the CD use "eject cdrom" after making sure you are no longer in the /cdrom directory (otherwise you'll get a "device busy" complaint and CD will not be ejected).

If you need "raw" access to a CDROM, then just like with any other removable device handled by the Volume Manager, this can be done by looking under /vol -- just like when you "tar" floppies.
