Which Netscape to use
Netscape is available in various forms on this system. Check the
"software" page for details. You need to use the Communicator,
not the Navigator form, to access your uleth.ca mailbox.
Mail at uleth.ca (IMAP server)
How to configure Netscape
Make the following changes to Netscape Communicator's configuration:
Start Communicator and then select:
1. Edit->Preferences
2. Mail & Groups:
3. Mail Server: The most current settings can be found on the Information
Technology pages at http://www.uleth.ca/it/Help/email/general_email_settings.html.
3. Directory: The most current settings can be found on the Information
Technology pages at http://www.uleth.ca/it/Help/email/ldap.html.
How to configure CDE's dtmail
Dtmail is the mail tool available with the default SUN desktop (known
as CDE). Accessing the uleth.ca IMAP server is easier and more convenient
using dtmail than through Netscape. To configure it, open dtmail and
select "Options", then select "Basic...". At the bottom of the resulting
window in the "IMAP Inbox Server" field enter: mail-in.uleth.ca
and then select "OK".
Note it is still possible to keep the cs.uleth.ca inbox
/home/mail/$LOGNAME
. If you want to keep using it too then you should
probably put this box on the menu. Use "Options", "Move Menu Setup" and
add Path/Mailbox Name: /home/mail/$LOGNAME
, of course substituting the
correct value for $LOGNAME
. More likely you will want to forward
your mail (see below).
Forwarding mail from cs.uleth.ca
If you want to have your cs.uleth.ca mail forwarded to uleth.ca
(or for that matter to any other mailbox), create a file ".forward"
in your home directory containing a single line which is the
e-mail address to which mail should be forwarded to. Be careful
not to generate loops. Mail should not be forwarded to accounts
that are short lived.
Note that the .forward file must not be writable by anyone other
than yourself. chmod 600 .forward
is suggested.
uleth.ca mailbox hints
See http://www.uleth.ca/it/Help/email.htm to answer your questions
about mail quotas, spam filtering, and virus blocking.
The Account Management page at https://www.uleth.ca/webtools/account_tools
can be used to check account status, set e-mail forwarding, change your
password, and perform other tasks related to your uleth.ca account.
If you do not want to use the uleth.ca mailbox you should forward mail
to your cs mailbox.
Note Netscape's Message Center shows your inbox at @uleth.ca
To query the address directory under Netscape's Edit menu select
-> Search Directory. Also you can search through your address book.
Your people.uleth.ca web pages
Information Technology provides information on using the people.uleth.ca
webserver at http://www.uleth.ca/it/Help/Web_Space.htm.
To copy files over to your web pages at uleth.ca, just use
ftp people.uleth.ca
but don't forget to do a "cd public_html" as the first command in the ftp
session.
Faculty members who wish to have their people.uleth.ca pages forward users to
the www.cs.uleth.ca pages should ftp a copy of a "transfer" html page to
people.uleth.ca
To obtain a suitable template you could modify a copy of http://home.uleth.ca/~holzmann/index.htm.
www.cs.uleth.ca, the Math & CS department's WWW server
The server has address http://www.cs.uleth.ca and is run independently
from other University servers (www.uleth.ca, people.uleth.ca).
Where to put your html files
WWW files for user LOGNAME must be located at or below directory
/home/LOGNAME/public_html. The directory and all files intended
for the WWW should have UNIX world accessible permissions.
The WWW address for those pages is http://www.cs.uleth.ca/~LOGNAME .
UNIX symbolic links [the kind you create with the "ln -s" command]
are not followed and should not be created.
Directories should have, but do not need to have, a file called
"index.html" or "index.htm" (PC braindead naming) in them.
If the index file does not exist, the WWW server offers a file listing
of the directory instead.
