Plain text and postscript files
These files can be printed from the command line using the lp command.
Sending print jobs: the lp command
lp [-o 2up] [-d cs1] file1.ext file2.ext ...
-o 2up: prints ascii files 2 pages per sheet, you can also print 4up and 8up. Since print usage is charged by the sheet not by the page, this is cheaper.-d cs1: use printer destination "cs1" - the printer in D519. see the printer list below to determine the printers available to you and their locations.
Duplex printing
To print duplex (two sided) use printer cs3 (only available to faculty)
with option: -o duplex
Canceling print jobs
cancel PRINTER-NUMBER
(for example: cancel cs1-25 )
If you do not know the number of your print job use the command
lpstat -o PRINTER
(for example: lpstat -o cs1 ) to list all the print jobs in the queue.
Other file types
All other types of files should be printed from an appropriate application:
acroread for PDF filesnetscape for GIF and JPG files
Print accounting
Printing on the main printers is charged for. To determine your printer usage send a dummy print job using "-o cost"
lp -d cs1 -o cost ~/.profile
The file you specify for printing (~/.profile in example) will not
be printed. An e-mail message listing amounts paid, amounts charged
and your balance will be automatically sent to you.
You are charged 5 cents per b/w page, 2.5 cents per cover page.
Approximate cost of printing is 2.5 cents per page in consummables
and 2.5 cents per page in capital costs.
Notes about the printers:
The printers in D519 and in E515 are HP Laser Jet 5000s, and in
C513 is a HP Laser Jet 4300.
Numerous options are available. Try
man -F net_lj5x net_lj4x
for a partial list of options.
Other printers and destinations exist, but they are not for general use.
Typically the other printers are personal printers or special purpose
destinations and should not be used without prior written permission.
