cattle ranch I still remembered last time i went to waterton. Along my way there are many cattle ranch aside the road. I think it is a good precentation of Alberta, since Alberta beef has a good fame. so that is what i made. I used 3D max to make and render the model.(there is also a lethbridge teapot in it). First I am going to talk about how I made the teapot. In order to get the shape of the teapot, I created two cones to be the top and lower part of the teapot. The base was quite easy to make. I used "taper"command to accomplish the curly surface of the base, made it concave down a bit so that it looks smooth. The top of the teapot is complex compare with the base. but it is easy to get. I bend the cone first (using "bent" command.) then "taper" it , finally i got a trumpet-like shape. The next step is cut part of the top. 3D-max refering "compound command" to combine two object together. I used "subtraction". to get the shape. last , add light and shadow. second is the cattle ranch. The model of the cattle comes from the web. by using "clone" I made several copies and spread them out. the logcabin was made very quick. I created the log. then "array" them. the roof is made of a pyramid. windows and door are made by boxes. (using compound to cut the shape properly). the surface of the ranch is made by a wire frame. when you draw the point of the frame the surface will move. so it can show the terrain. the grass in the field was a cone and scattered.("scatter") the last thing is to ajust the light. I think it is the most difficult part in the whole process. the background i choose is pretty much sunset time. so the light can not be very strong.since the viewpoint is opposite the light. so you can not see clear what the scene is. in order to solve this problem , I put three "omni" light at the front and one at the back so you can see the face and texture of the teapot.but the cattles are not ideal. their shadows are not dark enough. and the grass is too dark. 3D max is a powerful software. but I didn't control it well. otherwise i will get a better image. next i will do better.
