Prairie Discrete Mathematics Workshop 2021

The workshop builds on the success of the previous Prairie Discrete Math Workshops, from the first one organized by Shaun Fallat and Brian Alspach and held at the University of Regina in Regina, Saskatchewan, in early October 2003, through the most recent held at Brandon University in 2018. The intention is to gather together combinatorists from the prairie provinces and nearby locations for a relatively informal workshop. The workshop will be held in Lethbridge, hosted by the University of Lethbridge.

This workshop was originally planned for May 2020, but was postponed due to the pandemic. We hope that public health restrictions will allow some people to attend in person, but will ensure the meeting is available and accessible for virtual participation. In addition to the event hosting at the University of Lethbridge, small "watch party" gatherings may be organised at other locations. If you would like to arrange a local "watch party," contact the organisers: we may be able to reimburse costs for snacks/meals at these events.

We are trying to plan an event that is as flexible as possible to accommodate public health scenarios and participant travel limitations and safety concerns. Please let the organisers know if you have suggestions or special requests.

Place and Date

University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge, Alberta, Friday August 13 - Saturday August 14, 2021. Rooms SA6008 and SA6010 in the new Science Complex. Talks will begin early on the morning MOUNTAIN DAYLIGHT TIME of August 13 and end late in the afternoon on August 14, so we suggest that participants who are attending in person arrive on August 12 and not leave before the evening of August 14. Location and Registration

All events will be hosted at the University of Lethbridge, but there may be regional "watch parties" and the workshop will be open to virtual participants. All talks will be broadcast over Zoom. Please use the following link or meeting ID to connect to the workshop: Meeting ID: 915 2974 7376.

There is no registration fee. Breakfasts (continental) and lunches on the two days of the workshop will be covered by our funding from PIMS for those in Lethbridge. Efforts will be made to reimburse the cost of meals or snacks at "watch parties." Participants will be responsible for their own dinner arrangements and expenses, as well as accommodation arrangements and costs.

Please fill out this form to register for the workshop or email joy.morris@uleth.ca, so that we can make appropriate arrangements for catering. It will create an email message that you then need to send. If you need to cancel your registration for any reason, please email joy.morris@uleth.ca.

Lethbridge has a small airport (YQL). WestJet has recently resumed flights between Lethbridge and Calgary, and may be an option for anyone wanting to fly in. Otherwise, the nearest active airport is in Calgary (YYC). The Red Arrow luxury bus line runs between Calgary and Lethbridge with one trip per day that stops at both the Calgary Airport and the University of Lethbridge. There are also some shuttle options.

Financial Support

Limited financial support is available for post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, or senior undergraduate students who will be incurring costs for attending the workshop.

There is also support available for anyone incurring childcare costs in order to participate in the workshop (in person or virtually).

Please indicate your request when you register.

Accommodation

There are numerous hotels and motels in Lethbridge, but they are all on the opposite side of the river valley from the university. If the gathering is small, carpooling/rides or even moving the event to a hotel may be arranged. Participants are responsible for their own accommodation arrangements and costs.

Program

There will be 5 talks on each day. In order to provide high-quality video for those attending remotely, all talks will be given online even if the speaker is physically in Lethbridge. The Lethbridge gathering will be on campus at the University of Lethbridge, with livestreaming of all presentations. Rooms SA6008 and SA6010 in the university's new Science Annex have been booked; these are large lecture-style halls that will provide plenty of space for physical distancing.
