Computer Graphics 3710 Project

Canada Place, Vancouver BC

Looks kinda cool with the textures now… but the trip to a beautiful model like this was long and ardous

This project deals with creating a computer model of the landmark Canada Place cruise ship terminal in Vancouver BC. It was attempted in the tool called Google Sketchup, a relatively new tool on the 3D modeling. This tool allows for the ability to reduce a photo to a 3d model in a few steps… this feature is known as photo match. Initially I attempted to use a side view to create the model but this created an issue with depth but created a truly amazing model that looked and felt like the real thing – but only from the angle that the model was created at.

To use photomatch

You match the x y and z axis to straight lines that can be seen in the model

Once that is created you use primitives to layout the model

You can then apply the photo as a texture to the model and create a truly amazing looking model….

It just has some draw backs!

Result of wrong angle? The following occurs!

Model before Textures Reapplied

This project would have been much easier with a good tool that allows the development of curves rather than multiples of patches being used to create curves. The sails are quite possibly the hardest part of the model.
